Pierce County Council of Homemakers' Clubs Records

 Collection
Identifier: Mss 359

Scope and Contents

The Pierce County Council of Homemakers’ Clubs Records document the activities of the council, particularly in the 1980s and early 1990s. The earliest document is the council’s constitution of 1958 that was approved at its Spring 1958 meeting. The General files include listings of the clubs in the county together with membership and list of officers of each. There are only two meeting minutes of the council in 1984 and 1986. The financial ledgers cover from 1971 to 1991 in three separate binders, although there are gaps in the records. In addition there are some printed treasurer’s reports and other financial forms. Finally, there is a photocopy of a two-page handwritten historical sketch of the Modern Homemakers Club written in celebration of its 50th anniversary in 1979.

History

The Pierce County Council of Homemakers’ Clubs apparently was organized in 1958 with its objective, as stated in the constitution, ‘is to unify the interests and efforts of all Homemakers’ Clubs of Pierce County, and to cooperate with the County Extension Agents and the Extension Division of the Agricultural College in planning a program which will reach the greatest possible number of homemakers in the County, and promote the highest type of home and community life.” Member consists of all the homemakers clubs in Pierce County which, based upon internal records, numbered six. They included: Balta Hilites, Dewey Homemakers, Farmerettes, Helping Hand, Knox Busy Bees, Lazy Daisies and Modern. The council appears to have continued into the 1990s; however by 2001 they had disbanded.
