National Postal Transport Association, Fargo Branch Records

 Collection
Identifier: Mss 361-Mss 1576

Scope and Contents

The National Postal Transport Association Fargo Branch Records document the activities of this postal employees union at Fargo, N.D. from the 1930s to 1950s. The meeting minutes are complete from 1940 to 1953 and provide the most complete documentation on branch business. The Membership Index Ledger also is valuable in providing membership information for hundreds of members to include name, position and a date, presumably when employment began. Each entry also has a page number to another volume, although it is not part of this collection. The membership lists file are computer generated lists, likely from 1961. The Financial journal covers the period of 1931 to 1949 detailing income and expenses of the association. The Correspondence dates from the late 1950s and is a wide variety of incoming and some outgoing correspondence related to the branch, its members. Some correspondence is from the home office and the regional Tenth division. Of interest are the proceedings of the Tenth Division convention held in St. Paul, Minnesota in 1956. There is a 14 leaf listing of former and present members of the branch as of 1957. Each entry, compiled in alphabetical order, gives name, date and place of birth, position locations, date of retirement and date of death, if deceased. At the end is a listing of chief and assistant chief clerks from 1906 to 1953.

History

Little information is given in the records regarding the organization history of the Fargo Branch of the National Postal Transport Association. It was operating in 1931 with the name Railway Mail Association Fargo Branch, and likely organized much earlier. The National Postal Transport Association (NPTA) was the successor to the Railway Mail Association. The name change was prompted by the United States Post Office Department reorganizing the Railway Mail Service as the Postal Transportation Service on October 1, 1949. In 1961, the NPTA merged with the National Federation of Post Office Clerks (NFPOC) and the United National Association of Post Office Clerks (UNAPOC) to form the 115,000-member United Federation of Postal Clerks (UFPC).
