History

A meeting was held on August 27, 1958 to determine the feasibility of forming a Rose Society. Thirteen people were present. The society was formally organized on September 17, 1958. According to the constitution, the Red River Rose Society was formed “to encourage interest in and cultivation of the rose, and to be affiliated with the American Rose Society, and to spread the love of the ROSE whenever and wherever possible” (Constitution, pg. 1). Membership was open to anyone who was interested in roses, with dues of $3.00 per year. The first Rose Show was held June 28-29 in Fargo, the first flower show devoted only to roses held in North Dakota. There were 33 exhibitors and 154 entries.
