Scope and Contents

The Staale Hendrickson Papers have been organized into two series: correspondence and subject files.

The Correspondence Series has been arranged chronologically and contains both incoming and outgoing letters but is by no means complete. Yet, it does follow his career for the period 1917 to 1933. Some of the early correspondence is in Norwegian. Of note in the correspondence is the 1917 North Dakota Legislative session, L.L. Twichell and the Independent Voters Association (1925-1926), the New York Life Insurance Company, L.B. Hanna, and the Truax-Traer Coal Company especially during the 1933 Legislative session.

The Subject File Series contain a wide range of material including various certificates of awards, legislative bills and proposals, song lyrics, Burke County tax statements, and pamphlets of North Dakota official for 1914, 1917 and 1933. Of special note are a Burke County Retail Price List for 1919 compiled by a number of businessmen, a Norwegian Smallpox certificate of 1849, several political cartoons including an original drawing concerning Mr. Hendrickson, a campaign poster, a pamphlet, "Destroy the Cox-Tammany Rule in Burleigh County" and a scrapbook of newspaper clippings covering Mr. Hendrickson's career. Separated to Mss 1596.8 are a number of election certificates to the North Dakota House of Representatives, and a certificate of appreciation from the Unites States Food Administration.

Biography

Staale Hendrickson was born June 18, 1875 at Fjotlandsogn near Kristians, Norway, the son of Henrik and Inger Tonette (Olsdatter) Salveson. He attended five years of school and was employed as a shepherd in Norway. In 1893 he immigrated to the United States settling in Rugby, North Dakota. He worked for some years on the railroad and later operated a store in Rugby and Bowbells. On September 8, 1902 he married Anna Thompson, daughter of Alf and Bowbells. She was born September 8, 1877 at Kristiansand, Norway. He operated the store at Bowbells until it burned down, and then moved to Coteau, N.D. where he operated the New York Store for five years. From 1909 to 1929 he was a salesman for the New York Insurance Company. Mr. Hendrickson became interested in politics and served in the North Dakota House of Representatives in 1909 and from 1913 to 1917 as a Republican and the Independent Voters Association which was against the Nonpartisan League. He was also candidate for Congress in 1930 and Lieutenant Governor in 1942. Mr. Hendrickson was associated for 35 years with the Truax-Traer Coal Company in North Dakota and northwestern Minnesota, retiring in 1946. He attended all North Dakota legislative sessions until 1933 as a lobbyist for the lignite coal interests. In 1932 Mr. and Mrs. Hendrickson moved to Fargo and in 1935 to Grand Forks. There Mrs. Hendrickson died on November 2, 1940. In 1943 he married Adeline Wige of East Grand Forks, Minnesota. On July 22, 1956 in Grand Forks Mr. Hendrickson died and was buried beside his wife at Coteau, N.D. Mr. and Mrs. Hendrickson had seven children.
