History

The North Dakota Home Economics Association was organized in 1921 with a membership of fifty-five and was affiliated with the American Home Economics Association. The organizational meeting took place during the North Dakota Education Association convention in Fargo. Its purpose was ‘to further education and science in home economics.’ Its annual meetings from 1921 through 1949 were held in cooperation with the North Dakota Education Association. Beginning in 1950 the annual conventions were held in the spring. In 1995 its name was changed to North Dakota Association of Family and Consumer Sciences, reflecting the change of name of the national organization in 1994 to American Association of Family and Consumer Sciences.

NDAFCS has never officially disbanded, but the number of members dropped to fewer than twenty in the 1990s as professionals joined their content area associations rather than the "umbrella organization" (NDAFCS/AAFCS), and there was no interest in meeting as a state group.
