Scope and Content

From the Collection: Mary Lynn Axtman-Schmaltz created or contributed to the family histories of her maiden surname familial lines. These lines include surnames of Axtman, Bohl, Buchler/Bickler, Rieter, Heilmann, and Senger just to name a few. Along with her maiden surname she did extensive research into her husband’s surname of Schmaltz. The concentration of Mary Lynn’s collection of research spans from 1995- 2005, but is contains items and information from 1925-2012. The collection is arranged into five series. The series include:

The Complete Genealogies series contains completed family histories that Mary Lynn either completed, helped to complete, or used for her research. The complete family histories include the Surnames of Axtman, Bischoff, Bohl, Buchler, Heilmann, Hilzendeger, Huber, Schmaltz, Schneider, Voeller, Volk, Voller, Ward, and Wildermann. Included in this series are the original drafts or master sheets of the Family Histories created by Mary Lynn for the surnames of Bohl, Buchler, and Heilmann.

The Genealogy Research series contains all of Mary Lynns surname research material. This series is organized alphabetically and divided into the Sub Series Family Genealogies, Incomplete family genealogies, and Ancestor Resources. The bulk of the Family Genealogies contain the surnames of Axtman, Bickler, Bohl, Buchler, Goetz, Keller, Reiter, Schneider, and Volk. The Axtman Volkersbach EWZ folders contain EWZ records from families trying to escape the Odessa region and claim German citizenship at the closing of World War II. Incomplete family genealogies are arranged alphabetically. These folders contain surnames that had minimal research material or smaller genealogies that were off branched from bigger surnames. Ancestor Resources contains extensive lists of familial names, surname pedigree charts, and a list of Swiss Catholic Surnames.

The Regional Research series is arranged alphabetically by region. The regions are Alsace France, Canada, North Dakota, Germany, and Odessa/Russia. Each region contains research material collected by Mary Lynn about the area and surnames associated with the geographical location. In the German and Odessa Russia folders there are church registry records, and Surname lists.

The Reference Materials series contains published materials that are arranged alphabetically. Included in these folders are published books, magazines, and references. A large group if this series is written in the languages of German, Russian, and French. The folder titled War Years in the Philippines is a book written by Mary Lynn’s great uncle Father Axtman about his time in the war. In the end of this series are hand written notebook by Mary Lynn that contain her research information and maps her progression through her research material. The legal sized sub series contains Axtman-Bohl homestead records, newspapers, letter of correspondence and additional research material.

The Personal Documents series contains documents, photographs, photos, compact disks, floppy disks, maps, pedigree charts, and emails. The emails in this collection are from Mary Lynn to individuals concerning surnames and family histories. A section of these emails are from correspondence is Barbra Risling, concerning information about their family lines. The folder titled Cultural Heritage Tour 2001 maps Mary Lynn’s trip across Europe following her Germans from Russia heritage. The floppy disks and compact disks contain photographs of extended family, and 20th century township photos in rural North Dakota. Maps and pedigree charts are also found in oversized drawer 148.
