Scope and Contents

The Mary (Fitterer) Smith Collection consists of scanned copies of a large, oval portrait of Martin and Regina (Fix) Friedt; scanned images of a scrapbook containing family history information, letters, obituaries, newspaper clippings, maps, photographs, family charts, and documents relating to the Friedt and Fitterer families; and copies of family history information relating to the Friedt and Fitterer families, ancestral village information, maps, letters, and certificates.

The portrait of Martin and Regina (Fix) Friedt and the scrapbook are only available in digital format. These items were scanned by the GRHC and returned to the donor. These images are available for viewing on the GRHC’s Flickr (see Links section above). Three pages of the scrapbook were omitted and not uploaded for public viewing due to a donor restriction.

Some family history information relating to the Friedt and Fitterer families, ancestral village information, maps, letters, and certificates are available in print format. These documents were not uploaded online, but they are available for research at the GRHC. A description and listing of these documents are available below.

The collection has been arranged into three series: Family History, Correspondence, and Digital.

The Family History Series contains copies of naturalization records; death records; obituaries; certificates; newspaper clippings; information and records about George, Emilie, and John Fitterer; information and records on the Henke and Haupt familes; and information and records on the Fried, Freed, and Friedt families. Also included is some information on the village of Karlsruhe in the Beresan District of South Russia, which is an ancestral village of the families.

The Correspondence Series is comprised of copies of letters sent to Emilie Fitterer from Celestina Assel and Rosa Assel of Dushanbe, Tajikistan. The letters date from 1964-1967.

The Digital Series includes scanned images of a portrait of Martin and Regina (Fix) Friedt and scanned images a scrapbook containing family history information, letters, obituaries, newspaper clippings, maps, photographs, family charts, and documents relating to the Friedt and Fitterer families. The scrapbook dates from the early 1900s to the 2000s. Also available for viewing on Flickr are documents and other family history information that were found loose within the scrapbook.
