Scope and Contents

From the Collection:

The Theresa (Mack) Wald Collection contains textiles, certificates, a tea pot, and books relating to her family, especially her mother. The materials have been organized in three series: Book, Family History, and Textile.



The Book Series consists of two books. Das Leben der Heiligen Gottes was published in 1881, it contains information on the Loannig inside the front cover. Trost im Alter is a Catholic prayer book in German text, it was owned by Katherina (Doeringer) Mack.



The Family History Series contains three certificates and a tea pot. The first certificate marks Benedict Wald’s first communion at Sts. Peter and Paul Church on April 24, 1938. The second certificate is for Theresa Mack’s first communion at Sts. Peter and Paul’s Church in Karlsruhe, ND on April 8, 1934. The third certificate is for Johannes Mack and Katherina Doeringer, Theresa’s parents. They were married July 12, 1915 at Sts. Peter and Paul Church in Karlsruhe, ND. The white porcelain tea pot was brought to America from Neu Scheossle, Ukraine (South Russia) in 1914 by Katherina Doeringer.



The Textile Series consists of two shawls and two doilies. The first shawl is a blanket (Gross-Decken) of plaid double-layered wool/ mohair. It is nine pounds in weight with black twisted wool fringe at 78 x 78 inches in size. The blanket was made in the Kutschurgan district, South Russia and dates to around the 1880s, it was owned by Katherina (Doeringer) Mack. The second shawl is a head shawl. It is black wool with knotted silk fringe that is 6.5 inches long. The shawl’s measurements are 54.5 inches by 54.5 inches. It dates to 1914. The two doilies are both made of the same variegated emerald green to white thread. They are also of the same pattern and were made by Katherina (Doeringer) Mack.
