Scope and Contents

From the Collection:

The Dr. Elvire Necker-Eberhardt Collection consists of school related photographs from Bessarabia in the 1920s; miscellaneous materials, books, and textiles. The majority of the collection is undated, except for the photographs which are from the 1920s and two loose items date to 1984 and 2006. The collection has been arranged into four series: Photograph, Loose Material, Book, and Textile.

The Photograph Series contains nine images: four photographic postcards, three small photographic prints, and two cards with images printed on them. All of the images are from Bessarabia and date to the 1920s. The photographic postcards (2012.23.01-04) are of schoolgirls in Bessarabia, most of the girls are unidentified. Only one girl is identified in the images: Frieda Heier. The three small prints are busts of three girls in school uniforms, which are dark uniforms with white collars. The two cards both have an image of a school on them. One has an image of a boys school and the other has a girls school.

The Loose Materials Series is comprised of miscellaneous items that were found in the books that were donated as part of the collection. The series has clippings; booklets; first, second, and third place ribbons from the Medicine Hat Exhibition & Stampede; and an obituary of Jakob Kempf, dating to 2006. Also included is the 1940 Dorfplan [city/village plan] of Elvire’s home village, Sofiewka, which is located in Bessarabia.

The largest series in the collection is the Book Series, which has sixteen books in the German language. Most of the books were published from the 1970s to the 1990s. These books have been cataloged and placed with the GRHC Library.

The Textile Series consists of 4 textiles, 1 hat, 1 table cover, 2 wall hangings, 1 towel, 3 aprons, and 2 shawls. The design of the first apron [2000.03] was created by Else Tiede, mother of Erika Wolf, of Kulm, Bessarabia. Erika Wolf, now Bötcher, of Magdeburg, Germany gave this apron to Elvire Necker-Eberhardt. These items are located at the Emily P. Reynolds Historic Costume Collection on the NDSU campus.
