Scope and Contents

The Ruben Schock Collection consists of two books which date from 1895-1941.

Die Kleine Palme [2004.10.03] is a book of Sunday school hymns for young people, published in 1895 in Chicago, Illinois. The book is in German. It has a handwritten inscription on the inside cover, “Hoffnungstal gemeinde.”

The Lutheran Hymnal [2004.10.04] was published by Concordia Publishing House of St. Louis, Missouri in 1941. The book is in English. Inscribed on the bookplate is: “This Book is Church Property. Im. Luth. Church, Elgin, N. Dak.” Handwritten lyrics on inside of back cover.

Biography

Ruben Schock was born on August 7, 1922, on the family homestead near Elgin, North Dakota, to Fred and Katherine (Heupel) Schock. On July 6, 1941, Ruben Schock married Delia Sprecher, and they had nine children: Lu Ella, Marvin, Betty, Jeanette, Leslie, Karen, Jo Ann, Eugene, and Brenda. Ruben was a farmer, Sunday school teacher, and a superintendent. Delia (Sprecher) Schock died on May 16, 2002. Ruben Schock died on May 7, 2006.
