Scope and Contents

The Dorothy (Taylor) Sanders Collection contains ten textile items, housed at the Emily P. Reynolds Historic Costume Collection, NDSU. The collection also contains one business ledger, dated 1894-1925. Also present are one photocopy of a photograph, one typewritten correspondence, and two gift card tags that were originally found with the textiles. 2010.10.01 Business ledger, 252 pages. German-language record concerning businesses and private citizens with numerous family names and dates. Entries in pencil, blue pencil, black & green ink. 1894 is the earliest entry date, 1925 is the latest entry date. Some of the businesses featured in the ledger include: Bank of Eureka, Rider & Jenin, I W Fallike, Jewett Brothers, Wemoth [Weymouth?] Howard & Co., Finch, Van Slyck & Company, Arnott & Corbett, Standard Oil Company. Some of the names of people mentioned in the ledger are Jakob Schmitt, Christian Zeller, John Pielz, Kasper Holz, Frank Lyon, Ella E Stout, F. Shumacher, York, Nebr, Gottlief Myer, and Ellis Myer. The ledger also features prayers or songs on pages 169-170.

2010.10.02 Photocopy of snapshot, enlarged. Shows two women, young one in full apron of floral print with rickrack trim worn over a sleeveless print dress. Older woman in plain white blouse with ¾ sleeves. May be wearing skirt or apron over skirt. Cord belt ends by right elbow. Inscribed above image: “Came to USA 1889/Johann & Dora Maier. Homesteaded in Eureke [sic] 8 miles w[est] 8 miles So/moved to Moorhead, Minn 1904-1906. Family home was moved to Bonanzaville/Maier Doll house originally now medical collection housed there now.” Inscribed below image: [at left] Magdelina “Maggie” Maier/Taylor 1st/Hanson 2nd 1924. [at right] Dorothea Maier (maiden name: Keller).

2010.10.14 Correspondence. Telegram to RH Hemmesch from GA Erickson, Agent, dated 17 January 1955 from Fargo, North Dakota about birth record for Godfrey Mayer. “I am enclosing this with a book record kept by his father which shows him as being born June 18, 1889.” [See page 54.]

Biography

Johann (John) Maier was born in Russia in 1858. In 1879, he married Dorothea Maier, also of Russia. They immigrated to the United States in 1889 and settled in Lake, South Dakota, which is in Campbell County. According to the 1900 and 1910 census records, the Maiers had seven children. John is listed as the head of household, his occupation being recorded as “farmer.”

The textiles (items 2010.10.03 – 2010.10.13) have been separated from the collection and are housed at the Emily P. Reynolds Historic Costume Collection, NDSU. Advance notice is requested for the viewing of these materials.

Textiles

2010.10.03 - Wood Shawl.
Approximately 66” x 72”, not including fringe. Two shades of brown. Vermiform meander design, background pattern is diagonal, fringe is twisted.
2010.10.04 - Yardage of wool fabric.
Yardage of wool fabric, approximately 96” x 38” – possible blanket, shawl or table cover (use unknown). Woven; black, red, green, lavender/purple, and white wool. Has stripes sized from single to five rows. The visible warp is a lavender/blue. Bound on one long side with black and with light brown on both short ends.
2010.10.05 - Shawl.
Double knit, approximately 63” x 17”. Rectangle with a collar and ties added on the center of one side; black and green stripes both edges, center panel is light green and light orange; pocket each side, shield shaped, stitched on by machine napped surface.
2010.10.06 - Shawl.
Approximately 52” long with 2 ¾” fringe x 17” wide. Very thin navy fabric, cotton [?] print in plain weave, two layers. Fabric pattern: scattered narrow red rings with thin beige brick outline ending in a tiny leaves. Crocheted neckband and ties attached to center of one long side; double row of crocheting on long sides; thread used on collar edging and fringe is perle cotton in light teal, medium lavender, and medium mauve. Collar has tassels.
2010.10.07 - Skirt
Skirt, hand-made, approximately 22.5” waist to hem. Crocheted and knit using wool yarn. Colors: dark red, medium brown, dark brown, dark blue. Has two vertical seams. Design is alternating bands of color. Skirt has three vertical seams, two side and one center back. Waist gathered with elastic. Hem is uneven with crocheted (closed) fringe.
2010.10.08 - Scarf
Scarf, approximately 53”, with fringe x 8.5” in the center widening to 12” at each end. Hand– knit. Colors: dark red and blue. Design: wide stripes at center, narrow toward each end.
2010.10.09 - Night gown
Night gown, approximately 47.5” shoulder to hem. Machine stitched. White cotton (flour sacking according to family) with filet crochet lace yoke and sleeves. Yoke has a square neckline. Raw edge gathered into yoke/body seam. Has 1 ¾” hem. “SMITH” printed under one arm.
2010.10.10 - Cap
Cap, approximately 8” x 9.5”, folded. Crocheted with natural and red dyed wool. Thick yarn without twists. Edged with red crochet border. Has two wide red stripes along front edge where it is turned back.
2010.10.11 - Bodice
Bodice, approximately 15” from front neckline to hem. Light blue plain weave cotton. Square yoke front and back, self-faced. Bishop sleeves above cuff. No shoulder seam. Cuffs edged in narrow machine lace open on one side with two small snaps inside. Gathered fullness at yoke/ bodice front and back seam. Bodice hand and machine stitched with a tiny, decorative running stitch around yoke. Hand stitched hem. Four vertical release darts (4 front/ 4 back) at hem.
2010.10.12 - Women’s full knit (interlock) dress
Women’s full knit (interlock) dress. White rayon [?]. With pattern of deep red with hot pink roses, green leaves, and black accents scattered throughout; heavier concentration of roses at front center and on short sleeves heavier. Fitted sleeves, 11” long, hand finished with blind hem. Princess seamed bodice in front, gathers at bust point. Self-faced neckline, close fitting with small “V” in front and decorative ties at center front. Tucks in back at waist. Princess seamed in back, fullness added w/gathers at center front. 30” waist, 26” skirt length, 60” hem. Two ties at waistline originating in princess seams at each front opening, tying in back. Back opening 4.5” with 3 self-covered buttons. Side closure has snaps. Very narrow machine hems.
2010.10.13a - Card
Card. 3.5” x 4”. Found with dress 2010.10.12. “A Quaint Shop Original” printed upon the card. “A Gift for You.” Forget-me-nots on cover, in dark green, light green and purple with silver highlights. Inscribed “Rembrance [sic]/This dress was Maggie Hansen’s wedding dress.”
2010.10.13b - Card
Card. 3.5” x 4”. Found with dress 2010.10.12. “A Quaint Shop Original” printed upon the card. “A Gift for You.” Silver basket with yellow flowers on yellow-striped background. Inscribed “Rembrance [sic] This dress was boughen [sic] in the year of 1924 Grandma Maggie Hansen dress.”
