Scope and Contents

The Schaff Family History Collection consists of a twelve page typed history of the Schaff family. The family history was created by Barnabas M. Schaff, and it is believed to have been typed around 1986-1989. Barnabas Schaff writes about his family as well as his own memories. He recounts such things as settlement, everyday life, farming, schooling, the Bolshevik Revolution, immigration, and life in the United States.

Biography

Barnabas Schaff was born in Russia on November 25, 1899 to parents Mike and Margaret (Kary) Schaff. Mike and Margaret Schaff had twelve children: Eva, Adam, Mike, Anton, Nick, Ralph, Barnabas (Barney), Innocent, Anna, Matt, Rose, and Dominic. Dominic only lived for two days and Rose died when she was five years old. The Schaff family immigrated to the United States in 1913, settling in Montana.

Barnabas Schaff later moved to Idaho, where he eventually met his future wife. Bertha Nuxoll was born on April 23, 1908 to parents John and Maria (Beckman) Nuxoll of Greencreek, Idaho.

On November 15, 1927, Barnabas Schaff married Bertha Nuxoll. Barnabas and Bertha Schaff lived in Idaho and raised their eight children: Thecla, Theresa, Mark, Laura, Edward, Edith, Sophia, and Roberta. Barnabas (Barney) Schaff died on April 22, 1989. Bertha (Nuxoll) Schaff died on January 14, 2003 at the age of ninety-four.
