Scope and Contents

The Charles Eckroth Collection consists of one Ukrainian baptismal certificate. The baptismal certificate is for Gabriel Eckroth and is dated 1891. The certificate is signed by Father Jacob Scherr.

Also included in the collection is a typed translation of another baptismal certificate. The typed translation is for the baptismal certificate of Louis Eckroth, Gabriel’s brother, which is not included in the collection, but it serves as a translation guide for Gabriel Eckroth’s certificate.

Biography

Andrew Eckroth was born to parents John and Catherine (Loran) Eckroth on August 24, 1848. Andrew was the oldest of ten children. Andrew Eckroth married Katherina Kopp, and the couple had seven children: Mary, Gabriel, Frances, Edith, Frona, John, and Louis. Frona and John both died as infants before the family emigrated from Russia.

The Eckroth family immigrated to the United States in the autumn of 1891 or 1892, settling around Mandan, North Dakota. Andrew held many jobs over the years, including shoveling coal for the railroad, day laborer, carpenter, and construction worker. Andrew Eckroth died on December 24, 1915 at the age of sixty-seven. Katherine (Kopp) Eckroth died on March 18, 1921 at the age of sixty-nine.

Gabriel Eckroth was born in 1877 or 1878 to parents Andrew married Katherina Eckroth. Gabriel married Apolonia Brown. Gabriel died on July, 22 1929 at the age of fifty. Apolonia Eckroth died on July 30, 1965 at the age of eighty-eight.

Louis Eckroth was born on March 22, 1889 to parents Andrew married Katherina Eckroth. Louis Eckroth married Ida Hedwig Grunenfelder on May 28, 1912, and the couple had fourteen children: Frank, Gabriel, Caroline, Louise, Louista, Thomas, Marie, James, Beatrice, Richard, Edward, Leonard, Charles, and Anthony. Ida (Hattie) Eckroth died on March 29, 1971 at the age of eighty. Louis Eckroth died on April 12, 1985 at the age of ninety-six.
