Scope and Contents

The Walter Emil Flato Collection consists of thirty-three copied photographs of the Walter Emil Flato family, dating from 1907 to 2008; a letter to the editor written by Walter Flato; and a memorial card and obituary for Walter Flato. The collection has been organized into two series: Walter Flato and Photograph.

The Walter Flato Series contains three items relating to Walter Flato. The memorial card and the obituary date to 2008. The letter to the editor was written by Walter Flato. It is a copy and is from an unidentified publication. Walter writes about his thoughts and background on bilingual education. The year 1986 is handwritten at the end of the article.

The Photograph Series is comprised of thirty-three copied photographs of Walter Flato and his family spanning the many years of his life. The images were taken in Europe and in the United States.

Biography

Walter Emil Flato was born on November 22, 1916 in Bessarabia. He was the youngest child born to Daniel and Wilhelmine Flato. From 1938 to 1940, Walter was drafted and served in the Romanian army. On February 26, 1941, Walter married Irma Leischner, and the couple had seven children: Erich, Willi, Lilli, Egon, Wilfred, Linda, and Rose. In 1942, Walter was drafted into the German army. He served throughout World War II, being discharged in 1945, and was wound several times. In 1952, the Flato family immigrated to the United States, eventually settling in California. Walter and Irma’s two oldest sons, Erich and Willi, were both killed in a motorcycle accident in 1960. Irma (Leischner) Flato died on May 5, 1988. Walter E. Flato died on March 19, 2008, at the age of ninety-one.
