Biography

Joseph J. Schneider of Logan County, ND, is the one of fourteen children born to John (Johannes) L. Schneider (1877-1946) born in Strassburg, south Russia and Margaretha Dudenhefner Schneider (1885-1945) born in Kandel in south Russia. Both Strassburg and Kandel are among the six Catholic colonies in the Kutschurgan District northwest of Odessa city. Johannes served in the Russian Army from 1898 to 1905 fighting in the Russo-Japanese War in 1904-1905. John (Johannes) may have deserted and immigrated to the United States in 1906, the year of the Odessa city workers’ uprising, settling in Strasburg, ND. Margaretha Dudenhefner and son John Jr. arrived at Ellis Island, New York in 1907, from Odessa, Russia. Her parents were Henry Dudenhefner and Johanna Palach Dudenhefner.
