Kaye (Senger) Volk Collection

 Collection
Identifier: GRHC 011

Scope and Contents

The Kaye (Senger) Volk Collection consists of almost one thousand periodical clippings and notices relating to events, such as weddings, anniversaries, or funerals. The majority of this collection consists of obituaries of people who either lived in Devils Lake, North Dakota, or were originally from the surrounding area. These materials date from 1952 until 2016. Most of the clippings were taken from the Devils Lake Journal. The collection has been organized into two series: Obituary and Subject.

A spreadsheet containing the vital information taken from these obituaries and notices has been created and is available on DSpace. It can be accessed by clicking on “Obituaries and Notices Database” at the following link: http://library.ndsu.edu/repository/handle/10365/19237

The Obituary Series was arranged alphabetically according to the surname/ last name of the individual. The series includes newspaper clippings, memorial cards, and funeral programs of the individuals. One folder of obituaries with multiple subjects is present. An individual might have items in both the programs and obituaries folders of each letter. The newspaper clippings and the funeral programs of each letter were separated and put into different folders due to preservation concerns. The Obituaries and Notices Database (see link above) lists the box and folder number(s) of each individual.

The Subject Series consists of seven folders of announcements and flyers from events around Devils Lake and other periodical clippings that are not obituaries, but relate to the people and events of that region. The series includes anniversary, birth, death, wedding and engagement, and town and community announcements.
