Scope and Contents

The Andrew Johs Collection consists of copied German folksongs, a script to Easter Cantata “Passion,” and four books. The collection has been organized into three series: Folk Song, Subject, and Book.

The Folk Song Series contains many handwritten and typed folk songs. The vast majority of them are in the German language but some are in English. [See the collection inventory for a full listing of the folksongs].

The Subject Series is comprised of eight pages to an Easter Cantata: “Passion.” Also included is a two page insert of Pilate’s Trial of Christ. All of these are photocopies.

The Books Series includes four books. Three books are in German and one is in English. See the listing below for a more detail description of the books.

Biography

Andrew Johs was born in Logan County, North Dakota on December 10, 1909. His parents were Johann and Johanna (Schwartzenberger) Johs. Johanna (1884-1965) was born in Elsass, South Russia. Johann (1879-1925) was born in Kleinliebentall, Russia. Andrew married Mary Ann Schmidt in 1932. They farmed near Napoleon, North Dakota for 45 years. Both were of the Catholic faith. Andrew Johs died on January 11, 2005 at the age of ninety-five.
