Biography

The donor of this collection, John Strohmaier, Jr., is descended from the Meitzner family, who emigrated from Seimeny, Bessarabia, South Russia in 1903; and the Strohmaier family, who lived in Friedorf, South Russia, before relocating in 1905. Both families built homesteads near Elgin, North Dakota after settling in the United States. John C. Strohmaier married Elizabeth Meitzner in Elgin in 1916 and moved into the Meitzner family home. The family was forced to sell their farm in 1935 due to drought and they relocated to Lodi, California, where they would raise their five children. Elizabeth (Meitzner) Strohmaier died in 1957 in Lodi. John C. Strohmaier died in 1966, also in Lodi.
