Scope and Contents

The Gary J. Hermann Collection is comprised of six German baptism, confirmation, and wedding certificates. The certificates range from 1903 to 1931. The collection includes one confirmation certificate for Helena Schell, a confirmation and baptismal certificate for Johann Schoell, a baptismal and confirmation certificate for Maria Pfeifle, and a marriage certificate for John Schell and Mary Pfeifle. All the certificates were published by the Wartburg Publishing House in Chicago, Illinois.

Biography

The Schoell (Schell) family immigrated to the United States from Gluckstal, South Russia, in 1898. They homesteaded in Moscow Township, McPherson County, South Dakota.

Helena Schoell (Schell) was the daughter of Christ and Rosina Schoell (Schell) and sister of Johann Schoell (John Schell). Helena was born on February 17, 1900, and she died on February 19, 1922.

Johann Schoell (John Schell) was born on May 23, 1903, to parents Christ and Rosina Schoell (Schell). On June 21, 1931, Johann Schoell (John Schell) married Maria Pfeifle (Mary Pfeifle). They had no children, but John had a daughter, Frieda, from a previous marriage. John Schell died on September 3, 1972.

Maria Pfeifle (Mary Pfeifle) was born on January 8, 1911 at Venturia, North Dakota, to Johannes and Katherina (Sayler) Pfeifle. Mary (Pfeifle) Schell died on May 30, 2002.

Frieda Schell was born on March 21, 1927. She was the daughter of John Schell. On June 21, 1947, Frieda married Gustave Hermann. Gustave and Frieda (Schell) Hermann had three children: Gary, Gerald, and Marie.

Gary Hermann was born on August 30, 1948, in Richardton, ND, to Gustave and Frieda (Schell) Hermann.
