Biography

John Schumacher, Sr. was born in Glueckstal, South Russia on 18 January 1871 to Wilhelm and Rosina (Schnabel) Schumacher. He and his family arrived in the United States in 1889, traveling by the Chicago, Milwaukee, and St. Paul Railroad to their new home of Eureka, South Dakota. The family was poor and lived in a sod home, purchasing farming equipment by credit from his cousin Fred Schumacher. In 1895, John and Magdalena (Hoffman) Schumacher were wed and made their home on a farm in South Dakota, near the border with North Dakota. The Schumachers had two children, a daughter who passed away in infancy, and John Schumacher, Jr. who was born in 1897. Magdalena passed away in 1899, and Schumacher remarried Fredericka (Mayer) Nitschke-Schumacher in 1899. This marriage produced eight children, one of whom died in infancy. The Schumachers moved to Ashley, North Dakota, where they farmed until 1939. Mr. Schumacher lived on the farm until old age.
