Scope and Contents

The Rev. Leonard Eckroth Collection consists of one folder, the Typescripts Series, containing a photocopied copy of an article about North Dakota’s “Anti-Garb Law”, which was written by Linda Grathwohl of Southern Minnesota Legal Services and published in 1993 in University of Nebraska’s Great Plains Quarterly. The Anti-Garb Laws were intended to prohibit nuns who taught in public schools from wearing their religious vestments during the 1930s and 1940s.

Also present within this collection are several electronic media resources. A VHS cassette tape, titled “Bishop Joseph Werth” (2011.52.01) contains footage of a service held in Sts. Peter & Paul Catholic Church in Strasburg, ND, date unknown. An audio cassette tape (2011.52.02) and a compact disc (2011.52.03) containing the same material, entitled “Mrs. Krumm’s Story”, is also present.

Biography

The donor of this collection, Father Leonard Eckroth, was a priest at Saints Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Strasburg, North Dakota. His father emigrated from Karlsruhe, Ukraine in 1891 and moved to North Dakota. He was ordained in 1958 and resides in Bowbells, North Dakota.

Saints Peter and Paul Catholic Church, Strasburg, Emmons County, North Dakota, on Highway 83 is a gothic and Romanesque style church completed in 1911. It was blessed in June of the same year by Bishop Vincent Wherle, of the Diocese of Bismarck, ND during a Pontifical High Mass. It was consecrated on June 28, 1916 as the second consecrated Church in the Diocese. The Abbey Church at Richardton, ND was the first and only other consecrated Church in the Diocese of Bismarck, ND.
