Biography
The Stolz family who settled in Saskatchewan, Canada, had its origins in Alt-Elft in Bessarabia, Russia, but were originally of German descent. In 1904, August Stolz (1877-1951), his wife Lydia (Siewert), and their children Alexander, Barnard, and Elizabeth, immigrated to Canada, after other relatives had done the same and sent positive reports to Stolz. The family sold all of their belongings and travelled to North America, landing at New York City on 1 January 1905, and then journeyed by railroad to Melville, Saskatchewan. By 1910, the family had moved to the Happyland District of Saskatchewan and built a farmstead near Mendham. Mr. and Mrs. Stolz had twelve children and numerous grandchildren, their descendants remaining in Saskatchewan and throughout Canada. August Stolz died in 1951 in Mendham and Lydia Stolz passed away in 1972. Both are laid to rest in the Zion Evangelical Cemetery in Mendham. (Source: “The Stolz Family History: 1850-1974”)
