Scope and Contents

The Zeeland Band Collection is a small collection consisting of one photograph. The photograph was donated by Roger Reede on behalf of his mother, Lauretta M. Reede, who was the original owner of the photograph. The image is of the 1931 Zeeland, North Dakota Band. There are thirty-nine men in the photograph, and they are all wearing matching white uniforms and holding their instruments. Only one man has been identified in the photograph. Forth from the right in the front row is F.E. Reede (Ferdinand Edward Reede). He played the trumpet.

According to the 2002 Zeeland Centennial Heritage Calendar, the Zeeland Concert Band was organized in 1908 and “at one time, 50 band members would play for dances…”

Biography

Ferdinand (F.E.) Reede was born on August 14, 1908, to parents John and Elizabeth (Kilber) Reede. John and Elizabeth Reede had four children: Ferdinand, Victor, Harold, and Irene.

John Reede was the first person to deliver fuel for Standard Oil in Zeeland, North Dakota. His song, F.E. Reede, worked for Standard Oil in Zeeland for most of his life. The Reede family also operated the Standard Oil Service station in Zeeland. Ferdinand managed the business until his death, upon which his brother, Victor, took over until his retirement.

Lauretta M. Reede was born on January 11, 1911. Ferdinand and Lauretta married and had two children: Jane and Roger. Ferdinand died on February 19, 1964 at the age of fifty-five, and Lauretta died on April 29, 2007 at the age of ninety-six.
