Scope and Contents

The Ardith (Amundson) James Collection consists of a letter from 1937; two pedigree charts for the Amundson and Neumiller families; fourteen photographs of the Milde, Neumiller, Amundson, and Munsch families, dating from 1895 to 1997; and a woolen afghan, circa 1960s. The collection has been organized into three series: Family History, Images, and Textiles.

The Family History Series is comprised of two pedigree charts and a family group record for Carl August Milde and Christina Neumiller . One is a pedigree chart for Ardith Amundson that was created on 10 May 2000, and the other is a pedigree chart for Christina Neumiller that was created on 19 March 2002. Both pedigree charts were drafted by Ardith (Amundson) James.

The Image Series contains twelve photographs and two photocopies. They date from 1895 to 1997. See the folder list for descriptions. One of the copied photos, a portrait of the Phillip and Margaretha “Maria” Munsch family, circa 1899, can be found in the Edward and Christina (Munsch) Berreth Collection [photo #: 2011.41.93].

The Textile Series contains of one Afghan, which was made by Emma (Neumiller) Larson in the 1960s. The Afghan (2007.10.02) was also used as a sofa covering. The Afghan has “hair-pin lace” crochet, and golden-yellow color yarn. The size of the Afghan is 33 inches wide and 66 inches long, with same colored tassels along 33 inch-edges. Emma (Neumiller) Larson was 88 years of age when she gifted her niece, Elsie (Milde) Amundson, with the Afghan.

Biography

Elsie (Milde) Amundson was born in Selby, South Dakota on May 8, 1906 to Carl and Christina (Neumiller) Milde. Elsie grew up in Wishek, North Dakota, but they family later moved to Bismarck. On September 18, 1930, Elsie married Archie Amundson, and they had one daughter: Ardith. In 1945, the family moved to California. Archie Amundson died on March 31, 1979. Elsie (Milde) Amundson died on October 20, 1995.

Ardith (Amundson) James was born on September 30, 1932 to Carl and Christina (Neumiller) Milde. The Amundson family moved to California in 1945. On August 15, 1954, Ardith married Henry James.
