Scope and Contents

The Philippine (Baumgartner) Berglund and Agnes (Baumgartner) Wudtke Family Collection includes various family histories, genealogy, education materials, photographs, recipes, multimedia, and textiles. In addition, there are many scrapbooks and photograph albums that belonged to Agnes and Philipine with photographs showing their early life, college days and later years with family.

The collection contains information, records, and photographs regarding the Baumgartner, Miller, and related families dating from the 1890s into the 1990s. The majority of the material is about family members, spouses and children; and education and important events in and around Emmons County, North Dakota, and the cities of Strasburg and Linton in that county.

The Philippine (Baumgartner) Berglund Series contains a few report cards, County Superintendent of Schools campaign cards, speeches, certificates, correspondence, endowment materials, and funeral guest book. Dates range from 1934 into the 1990s.

The Gustav Berglund Series contains newspaper articles, awards received, memorial materials, and funeral guest book. The Gus Berglund Education Series has his graduate papers and theses dating from 1961 to 1971 including a report for Emmons County and the city of Linton.

The Agnes Baumgartner Wudke Series contains teaching material from 1932 through 1954, report cards, school autograph album, scholarship materials, and funeral guest book, with date ranging from 1928 to 1977. The Agnes Baumgartner Wudtke Education Series contains school documents, teaching records and materials dating from 1932 to 1975.

A Family History Series has family histories regarding Baumgartner, Berglund, Miller, Volk, Silbernagel, Kramer and Bachmeier-Braun families. There are news articles about family members, memorial cards for family and friends, and family correspondence, 1928-1974

A Certificate Sub-Series contains certificates for Johannes and Odelia Baumgartner and Rose Senger. Subjects are baptism and citizenship dating from 1894 to 1911, and school from 1930 to 1933.

The Guestbook Sub-Series contains family funeral guest books not found in other series.

A Miller Family Sub-Series has Miller/ Mueller genealogy as well as Donald Miller’s baby book, school achievements and awards. Donald’s dates range from 1936 to 1998.

An Emmons County Series has photographs, newsclippings, a school bulletin, alumni program, and banquet program. Dates range from 1940 to 1976.

The Ephemera Series contains a calling card of Leo Kraft, receipt for photos from Koeppen Studio, Linton dated 1964, and a note to Mary and Pete from Marie F. Klein. There is also a 1979 ordination card for Pete Kramer, Priest.

A Recipe Series has four files, one directly attributed to Philippine Baumgartner. Series includes recipe cards, hand-written recipes, clippings and one comb-bound recipe book.

The Photograph Series includes a large number of loose photos including real photo postcards, family photos, and number of unidentified photographs. Dates range from the late 1800s through the 1990s, regarding travel, friends of all ages, funerals and other ceremonies.

The Baumgartner Photograph Sub-Series has images of Philippine and Gus, Agnes, Rose Senger Baumgartner. Dates range from 1920s to the 1990s.

The Wikenheiser Photograph Sub-Series has images of Tillie Ann (Mrs. Jack Domito). Dates range from the 1930s to 1998.

The Miller Family Sub-Series contains images of family members including Donald and Pearl. Dates range from 1940s to 1998. A file for Peter Mueller dated 1923 is included.

An Events Sub-Series has photos of commencements, reunions, groups, burials, schools and businesses. Military photos from 1925 to 1952 are included. Dates range from the 1920s to the 1980s.

A Travel Sub-Series contains photographs with correspondence. Dates range from the 1920s to the 1990s.

The Artifact Series includes playing cards and a pinback button for Sts. Peter and Paul Church in Strasburg, ND, and a metal disk with two photographs.

The Scrapbook Series contains mostly personal memorabilia for Philippine and Agnes. Dates range from 1929 to 1972 and include college days, teaching, a wedding, sympathy cards and travel.

A Photograph Album Series has albums from both Philippine and Agnes. They contain photographs of family and friends, travel photos, and students. Dates are mostly from the 1960s and 1970s.

The Multimedia Series includes cassette tapes and film reels showing family vacations, a Christmas program, the prayer service for Rose Baumgartner, Philippine’s educational speeches and an interview with Philippine from 1997. Date range from 1967 to1997.

The Textile Series consists of a black wool shawl dating from 1880 to 1900; a black silk shawl with embroidered floral motifs dating from the 1880s to around 1910; a pair of black high-heeled boots decorated with rhinestones, cut glass, sequins and braid from the 1960s; an ankle length, black rayon faille skirt circa 1950s; a hand muff of unsheared beaver pelt from the 1890s. These are currently housed with the Emily P. Reynolds Historic Costume Collection at NDSU.

Family History

Michael M. Miller donated the bulk of the materials for the Philippine (Baumgartner) Berglund and Agnes (Baumgartner) Wudtke Family Collection. Michael Miller was their nephew.

Michael Baumgartner, son of Johannes Baumgartner and Margaretha Braunagel, was born in Strassburg, Kutschurgan District, Odessa Region on September 5, 1874. He married Otillia/Odelia Wolf, daughter of Casimir Wolf and Agnes Krueger, on April 29, 1892. She was born on December 25, 1872 also in Strassburg, Kutschurgan District. Michael and Odelia immigrated to the United States in 1889, and settled on a farm near Strasburg, North Dakota. They had 10 children: Eva, Michael Jr., Barbara, Margaret, Frank, John, Mary, Philippine, Agnes, and Odelia. Michael died on November 11, 1942 and Odelia on March 7, 1954, both in Strasburg, North Dakota.

Mary Baumgartner, daughter of Michael and Odelia Baumgartner, was born on August 28, 1907. She married Peter P. Miller, son of Peter and Agnes (Schreiner) Miller, on January 12, 1927. Peter and Agnes (Schreiner) Miller immigrated to the United States in 1894, settling near Krasna, North Dakota. Peter P. Miller was born on June 4, 1904. Peter P. and Mary had 6 children: Oswald, Harold, Donald, Pearl, Ramona, and Michael (donor of materials). Peter died on August 1, 1984 and Mary died on July 17, 1970.

Philippine Baumgartner, daughter of Michael and Odelia Baumgartner, was born on March 23, 1910. She married Gustav Harrie Berglund on December 24, 1944. Gustav Berglund was born on September 3, 1908 to Erick Alfred Berglund and Sarah Olivia Hegquist. Philippine and Gustav had no children. Philippine taught first grade in Strasburg, ND, for about 20 years and Emmons County School Superintendent for about 20 years. Gustav died on October 31, 1974 and Philippine on November 5, 2005.

Agnes Baumgartner, daughter of Michael and Odelia Baumgartner, was born on January 25, 1914. She married Gustav Wudtke on August 15, 1963. Gustav Wudtke was born on March 19, 1903 to Gustav Wudtke and Magdalena Schnaible. Agnes and Gustav did not have children. Agnes was a 5th grade school teacher in Linton, ND, for 25 years and an elementary school principal in Strasburg. Gustav died on September 16, 1963 and Agnes died in 1975.

Provenance

Materials were donated by numerous donors over the years including Phillippine Berglund in 1994 and Michael Miller in 2001, 2004, and 2020.

  1. 1994.02.01 - Head shawl. Black wool broadcloth with wool fringe, fringe is uneven from wear, measurements are 43” x 48.” Used by Philippine Baumgartner Bergland. Date: 1880 – 1900.
  2. 1994.02.02 - Shawl. Black silk with black and red embroidered floral motifs, find black knotted fringe measuring 10” long. One motif is swan-shaped, measures with fringe 79” x 74.” Date 1880s-1910s.
  3. 1994.02.03 - Boots. Black, high heel, pointed toe, ankle-high pull-ons, with arabesque decoration of middle-braid, sequins, and faceted, cut glass insets. Rhinestone decorations on toe and vamp, elastic inserts below ankles, 3” stiletto heel. Date: circa 1960s.
  4. 1994.02.04 - 1994.02.04 Skirt of black rayon faille of one- quarter-circle cut with pattern black middy-braid trim. 2 ½” waistband at center front – goes to 4” wide point, side zipper, ankle length. Date: circa 1950s.
  5. 1994.02.05 - Hand muff/mütze of unsheared beaver pelt, with black tips on brown undercoat fur. Lined with taupe-colored silk and silk cord handle. Date: circa 1890s.
