Scope and Contents

The Delores (Ketterling) Hanson Collection consists of copies of a photograph and family history information and a shawl. The collection has been organized into two series: Family History and Textile.

The Family History Series is comprised of a photograph and a manuscript relating to a shawl. The image is a matted photograph of the interior of the Zeeland, ND Grain Elevator Office with manager Christian Munsch standing at his office desk. The image is dated to 1940. There is a dusty parlor stove in the foreground, a partially covered window in back, and a calendar on wall at right. Other people in the image are: Jake Ackerman (left, sitting) and Henry Bentz (left, standing in bib-overalls. The manuscript is titled “Grandmother’s Shawl.” It was written by Pauline (Munsch) Nelson in 1996. The manuscript has family history information and the story of the shawl.

The Textile Series includes one shawl. The shawl has Jacquard weave borders of gray, black, and white wool with nine inch borders of floral-paisley abstracted arabesques and with four-inch knotted fringe.

Biography

Delores “Kitty” Ketterling was born on February 19, 1931, in Artas, South Dakota, to Edward and Emma Ketterling. Delores was the oldest of four children. Her siblings were Clayton, Floyd, and James. Delores grew up and attended school in Napoleon, ND, graduating in 1949. After high school, Delores attended St. Luke’s Hospital School of Nursing in Fargo, ND, becoming a Registered Nurse (RN) in 1952.

On August 22, 1954, Delores married Gunder R. Hanson in Napoleon. The couple lived in Hazen for a while before moving to Perham, Minnesota, and later to Detroit Lakes, MN. Gunder and Delores (Ketterling) Hanson had five children: Linda, Gregory, Jeffery, Timothy, and Daniel.

Gunder Hanson died on May 6, 2011 at the age of eighty-four. Delores (Ketterling) Hanson died on June 30, 2013 at the age of eighty-two.
