Scope and Contents

The Der Lutheraner Collection consists of fifteen books containing twenty-one volumes of Der Lutheraner. The Lutheraner was an informational and educational newsletter containing doctrine, articles on the history of the Lutheran church and news articles submitted by churches. The publication promoted current events and included some national news. Dates cover 1865-1874, 1883-1884, 1887-1888, 1894-1896, and 1899-1904.

History

Der Lutheraner is a German language newsletter first published in 1844, and it promoted the preservation of the German language. Its audience was the newly-arrived Lutherans in the mid-19th century. It was a voice for and was instrumental in the formation of the Missouri Synod in 1847. Carl Ferdinand Wilhelm Walther (1811-1887) conceived, edited and wrote for the Der Lutheraner. Walther was the first president of the Lutheran Church - Missouri Synod.
