Scope and Contents

The Erna (Gehring) Brost Collection consists of a black trauerschal [mourning scarf]. This is a lacy piece of cloth women wore on their head at funerals or as a widow. It was machine made. Erna wore this until 1940. The garment is 112 inches long by 34 inches wide.

Biography

Erna Gehring was born on December 13, 1912 in Alexanderfeld, Bessaradia. She was born to Samuel Gehring and Mathilde Schulz. She married Immanuel Brost, from Dennewitz, Bessarabia. He was killed in an accident in April 1940 in Dennewitz; Erna was 27 at the time. She later immigrated to Canada, died on January 15, 1977, and is buried in Medicine Hat, Alberta.
