Biography
Johann Haag was born in Dennewitz, Bessarabia on October 15, 1864. Maria Tobler was born in Neu Elft circa 1863. Maria had a son, Rudolph Schulz, from her first marriage to Johann Schulz who died in Russia. Johann and Maria married. They then had a son, Nathaniel, in Bessarabia.
In 1889, due to Russia’s reestablishment of aggressive control over Bessarabia, Johann, Maria, and their two sons emigrated. They took a train to Hamburg, Germany, where they boarded a ship, “The Hungaria” to America. They arrived on May 3, 1889. They homesteaded near Fredonia, North Dakota where they built a sod house. They then had more children: David, Jacob, Maria Jr., Johann Jr., Edward, Gottlieb, and Anna. After the birth of more children, they built another house, this one from clay bricks, encircling the sod house.
Seven of the children are present in the family photograph. Gottlieb and Anna had not been born yet.
David Haag was the father to Roger Haag, who is married to Janet.
