Identifier: GRHC 152

Scope and Contents

The Judy Martin Collection consists of two textiles. The first textile [2000.05.01] is a lady’s fur cape, circa 1940s. It is black virgin lamb, lined in black silk. There are arm slots on sides, edged with braiding 24”x76” inches. The cape was purchased at an estate sale in Harvey, North Dakota. The second textile [2000.05.02] is a traditional men’s hat, “pudel-mütze” (poodle-nose), “karakul-mütze,” or “tepel” lined with black silk, circa 1880-1910. It has black curly lamb pelt for a winter hat with an up-turned brim, 26 inches x 16 inches. This hat was owned and worn by Wilhelm Lindenfield, an Odessa-area, Yiddish Jew. William Lindenfield later immigrated to Canada and settled at Foxholm/Foxhalm.

Biography

“Roland and Judy Martin were married in 1977. It was not until after they were married that Roland and [Judy’s] father began talking about family history when it was discovered that [Judy’s] grandfather and Roland’s father were from the Odessa area. There was only a river that separated the two colonies in which they were raised.” – note from the donor, Judy Martin
