Scope and Contents

The Marilyn (Opp) Evers Collection consists of one photograph of a military band in South Russia, circa 1904-1905. The photograph is a copied print of the original image. The band is made up of brass and clarinets. One man in the military band has been identified. Johann Opp is in the second row, second from the left. He has a Euphonium brass horn and is next to a man who has a small “mascot” puppy in his hand.

Biography

Johann Opp was born November 11, 1882 in Glückstal. He was the son of Johann and Christina (Schumacher) Opp. On January 28, 1908, Johann Opp married Katharina Heydt, and a year later they immigrated to the United States, settling near Eureka, South Dakota. Johann (later known as John) and Katharina had three children: John, Paul, and Anna. Johann (John) Opp died on January 9, 1940 at the age of fifty-seven. Katharina (Heydt) Opp died on June 24, 1954.

Marilyn (Opp) Evers was born on October 20, 1938 to parents Paul and Leila (Wade) Opp. On November 3, 1957, Marilyn married Henry Evers.
