The Maureen A. (Miller) Udell Collection consists of a pillow sham, two aprons and genealogy information from a German-language family Bible regarding August Mueller and Emilia Roedal, and their families.

Biography

August Miller (“Mueller”) was born on February 14, 1887 in Newdorf and died on November 15, 1957. August Miller married Emilia Roedal on April 5, 1909 at Neudorf rural church southwest of Gackle, North Dakota. Emilia Roedal was born on March 21, 1891 and died on September 28, 1973. They had 5 children: Albina, Hudalia/Andalia, Ana, Oskar, and Anna.

Maureen Miller was born on April 19, 1933 and died on September 14, 2006 at the age of 73. Maureen A. (Miller) Udell was the granddaughter of August and Emilia Miller.

Materials were donated by Maureen A. (Miller) Udell in March 20015.

Separated Materials

The pillow sham [2005.04.02] and the two aprons [2005.04.03-04] have been separated from the rest of the collection and are housed at the Emily P. Reynolds Historic Costume Collection on the NDSU campus. Advance notice is requested for the viewing of this item.

Textiles

Pillow sham [2005.04.02]
The pillow sham [2005.04.02] is made of white cotton percale and is twenty-six inches wide and twenty-nine inches long, with 1 ½ inch-wide white lace trim. The pillow sham has red stitched-embroidery and features two cobs of maize with husks with three paper-poppy blossoms surrounded by four spotted butterflies. The pillow sham was embroidered in Neudorf village, Glueckstal Colonies, circa 1904.
Apron [2005.04.03]
The first apron [2005.04.03] is a cobalt-purple woolen “wedding apron.” Two buttons secure two-inch waistband on the side. The apron is about forty-eight inches in length, gathered slightly at waistband; dating to circa 1906-1926.
Apron [2005.04.04]
The second apron [2005.04.04] is a black woolen skirt-length “wedding apron.” Two snap-fasteners secure the waistband. The apron is about forty-eight inches in length, gathered at two-inch wide waistband; dating to circa 1906-1926.
