Molly (Koch) Scheidel Collection
Scope and Contents
The Molly (Koch) Scheidel Collection consists of a book, Compendium of History and Biography of North Dakota, published in 1900 that was once owned by Walter S. Emery, Sr.; an application for Citrus Grove, circa early 1900s; and a newspaper, Townsend National Weekly – Vol. 5, No. 49, December 27, 1941. The collection has been organized into two series: Book and Subject.
The Book Series contains one book that once belonged to Walter S. Emery, Sr. The book was published in 1900 and is titled Compendium of History and Biography of North Dakota. A biography of Walter S. Emery, Sr. is featured on pages 213-214 in the book. The book features information pertinent to the history of the State of North Dakota as well as a compendium of biography of North Dakota giving insight into the life of early settlers of the state. The pages of the book are in good condition, but the cover and spine are not. Inscribed in the book is: “Property of Walter S. Emery, Sr.”
The Subject Series is comprised of loose material that was found in the book. One item is an application for Citrus Grove from the Herradura Plantation Company in Valley City, North Dakota. The application dates to around the early 1900s. The application is not filled out, and it has pencil scribbles on the back. The other item is a newspaper, Townsend National Weekly, Vol. 5, No. 49. This newspaper dates to December 27, 1941. The headline reads: “Amendment to Law Ready.”

Biography
Walter Emery, Sr. was born on June 26, 1861 on a farm in Somerset County in Maine. He was the son of Edwin and Mary (Ricker) Emery. In 1861 at the outbreak of the Civil War, Walter’s father, Edwin, joined the Seventh Maine Volunteer Infantry. Several months later he became ill and eventually died. Walter worked on the farm in Maine until the spring of1883 when he moved west. He settled in Minnesota and later moved to Wisconsin. In the fall of 1883, Walter settled on a farm in Barnes County, North Dakota. In Valley City in March 1884, Walter married Martha Beal, who was born on February 17, 1866 to Henry and Emily Beal. Walter and Martha (Beal) Emery had eight children: Edwin, Amos, Viola, Angie, Earnest, Walter, Esther, and Mattie. Walter would eventually become a very prosperous famer in Barnes County. Walter Emery, Sr. died on May 9, 1946 at the age of 84.
Molly (Koch) Scheidel was born on November 15, 1930 to Arthur and Mattie (Emery) Koch. Molly is a granddaughter of Walter Emery, Sr.
