Scope and Contents

The Ruth (Tietz) DeNault Collection consists of one copied portrait of the John Tietz, Jr. and Emilie (Treichel) Tietz family, circa 1927, and one shawl, circa 1870-1890.

The copied photograph [2007.09.01] is of John Tietz, Jr. and Emilie (Treichel) Tietz with their twelve children in 1927. The family lived on a farm north of New Leipzig, in Grant County, North Dakota. The people in the photograph have been identified. Back row (left to right): Bertha, Albert, Edward, Robert, Reinhold, Helen, and Mary. Front row (left to right): Theodore, Edna, John Jr., Arthur, Emilie, Elsie, and Oscar.

The shawl [2007.09.02] is a light-weight, hand-spun “Karierte Plachte”/ shoulder shawl of Prussian blue and white checkered-plaid pattern. This surviving Plachte/ shawl originated through Emilie’s Treichel household in Leipzig, Bessarabia, circa 1870-1890. The side of the shawl is 43 inches wide and 74 inches long.

Biography

John Tietz, Jr .was born on January 24, 1879, in Bessarabia, South Russia, to John and Karoline (Jeschke) Tietz. In 1899, John Tietz, Jr. married Emilie Treichel in March 1899. Later that year the family immigrated to the United States, settling in the Hebron, North Dakota area. In 1901, John Jr. and Emilie (Treichel) Tietz moved to their homestead north of the future town of New Leipzig, North Dakota. John Jr. and Emilie (Treichel) Tietz had thirteen children, twelve of which survived to adult hood: Bertha, Mary, Reinhold, Robert, Edward, Albert, Helen, Arthur, Oscar, Edna, Theodore, and Elsie. Emil Tietz died of influenza in 1910 at the age of two. John Tietz, Jr. died on May 15, 1945. Emilie (Treichel) Tietz died on died November 26, 1957.

Ruth (Tietz) DeNault was born on December 12, 1930 to Robert and Katherine (Hertz) Tietz.
