Scope and Contents

The Correspondence Series consists of six handwritten, German-language letters with four envelopes from Berta Stein in Alma-ata, Kazakhstan, USSR, to Anton Stein, Bismarck, North Dakota, concerning family health, deaths, and requests for assistance. Dates range from 1968 to 1970. Copies of the translations of the letters are included. There is photocopy of the contents of a greeting card relating to the translation of the German letters.

The Genealogy Series consists of photocopies and printouts of research on the Mosbrucker/ Stein family dating back to 1792. The series has handwritten family group sheets and notes for the family of Peter Mosbrucker born in 1835 in Landau, Russia and his descendents. Copies include an obituary and a funeral program.

The Photograph Series consists of nine printouts of family photographs showing a family grouping, wedding couples, the Mosbrucker house near New Salem, North Dakota and threshing scenes. Last names include Mosbrucker, Zander, Schaaf, Schaner and Kunz.

Biography

The Mosbrucker family came from Bundental in the Rhineland Palatinate in southwest Germany. They settled near the village of Landau, Beresan District, South Russia. Other family members were born in Sulz, Beresan District, South Russia. The Stein Family also came from Landau. Anton Stein (1890-1986), son of Joseph and Regina (Hilger) Stein, married Wilhelmina Zenter in 1930. Anton came to the United States in the late 1920s. His sister Emilia Stein (1888 – 1964), married Alex X. Mosbrucker in Odessa, Russia in 1908. They came to the United States in 1911.
