Scope and Contents
The Anthony Schwan Collection consists of three German handwritten letters written in 1975 and 1976, along with transcriptions and translations of each. In addition, there is correspondence between Anthony Schwan and Dr. Joseph S. Height concerning the translation of one of the letters. Also included is a folder containing music written in German, pedigree charts for Lawrence Welk, Christina Schwahn, and Anthony Schwan, and a newspaper article concerning the immigration of German-Russian people into South Dakota.

Biography
Anthony Valentine Schwan was born on August 30, 1931 in Aberdeen, South Dakota, to Joseph and Magdalene (Richter) Schwan. The letters were written by Anthony’s uncle Anton who was his father’s youngest brother. Anton had a son, Viktor Schwan. The letters are written from Anton to his sister, Amelia. Anthony’s parents were both born overseas. Joseph was born in Straßburg, Odessa, Ukraine, USSR on August 20, 1892 and Magdalene was born on May 13, 1894 in Selz, Odessa, Ukraine, USSR.
