Biographical / Historical

Esther Hasper, 85, Aberdeen, SD, formerly of Herreid and Pollock, SD, died Thursday, October 3, 2013 at Avera Mother Joseph Manor Retirement Community, Aberdeen, SD. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, October 7, 2013, at Pollock Memorial Presbyterian Church, Pollock, SD, with Rev. Floyd Haan officiating. Visitation will be for one hour before services at the church on Monday. Burial will be in Hull Cemetery at 1:00 p.m. Esther was born on April 16, 1928, at Decker Creek, six miles southwest of Westfield, ND, the daughter of Will and Gertrude (Plagemeyer) Pool. When she was five years old they moved to Strasburg and Esther graduated from Strasburg High School in 1946. After graduation, she taught in various country schools in Emmons County. Esther married Arnold Hasper on November 24, 1950. They lived on a farm seven miles north of Herreid, SD, until 2007 when they moved to Pollock, SD. They spent two winters in Texas and twenty-eight winters in Apache Junction, AZ, where they made many friends, and were involved in many activities at Rock Shadows Retirement Community. In 2010, Esther moved to Avera Mother Joseph Manor Retirement Community in Aberdeen. Esther enjoyed several hobbies, including china painting, embroidery, reading, and baking. She especially enjoyed playing cards with her grandchildren and great grandchildren. Esther was a former member of Hull Christian Reformed Church where she was very active in Ladies Aid and various church activities. She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary in Pollock, SD, and a member of a clown troupe in Arizona. Esther is survived by her husband of 62 years, Arnold, of Aberdeen, SD, four children and their spouses, Arlene (Ken) Odde, Manhattan, KS, Louise (Rick) Barondeau, Aberdeen, SD, Arlyn (Peggy) Hasper, Herreid, SD and Gail (Terry) Bacon of Aberdeen, SD, 14 grandchildren, 14 great grandchildren, two sisters and one brother-in-law, Elsie Ryckman of Pollock, SD, and Donna(Wayne) Fischer of Aberdeen, SD, as well as many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, son Jeff, great grandson Jacob Kessler, two sisters Genevieve Nieuwsma and Angeline Vander Laan, brother-in-law John Hasper, sister-in-law Jeannette Lawler and brothers-in-law Val Ryckman, Pete Nieuwsma and Ike Vander Laan and Terry Lawler.
