Biography

Thomas Carl Barnhart was born in 1951 and he graduated from California Polytechnic State University in San Luis Obispo in 1973 with a bachelors. He obtained his masters in 1974 from the same location. He received his doctorate from the University of New Mexico in 1978. Following that, he came to NDSU as a professor where he directed the recreation management degree. When he wasn’t teaching he directed the National Youth Sports program at NDSU. He also served as a commissioner on the Fargo Park Board. In 2004 he was elected to the North Dakota Recreation and Park Association Hall of Fame. In addition to recreation activities, Barnhart also served on the Faculty senate from 2003 to 2004. He retired from NDSU in 2017.

He married Sue Ann Gunhus (Wallace and Edna (Thompson) Gunhus) December 27, 1979 in Hoople, North Dakota. They lived in Fargo, having one son, Andrew and two daughters, Jessica and Laura. Sue Ann passed away June 8, 2005, as a result of a pedestrian-auto accident.
