Biographical / Historical

The teaching of history has been an integral part of the University curriculum from its beginning. The 1891 Prospectus for the University lists history as one of the courses of instruction. Prior to 1920, history was grouped with other courses under the general heading of “Group of Applied Sciences.” In 1920, the School of Science and Literature was established with history listed as a department within the RG 11.4.6 History Department Page 2 of 4 school. In 1939 it was the Department of History and Political Science. By 1960 it was once again the History Department, which it has remained. In 1982 the Department of History launched a Public History program which introduces students to such fields as archival and museum work. This is an area which has been receiving increasing attention around the country. NDSU's program is the first in this region. The Public History program requires a 60-credit professional major.
