Biographical / Historical

The teaching of English has been an integral part of the University curriculum from its beginning. The 1891 Prospectus for the University lists “English language and literature” as one of the courses of instruction. As of the 1901-1902 bulletin, the Department of English, Modern Languages and Philosophy is listed. As of the 1907-1908 bulletin, the Department of English and Philosophy is listed and continued RG 11.4.3 English Department Page 2 of 4 until 1964 when English became an independent department. English was joined again with Modern Languages, as of the 1969-1971 catalog - Department of English and Modern Languages, which seemed to be short-lived since as of the 1970-1972 catalog it was the English Department and has remained so through today.
