The collection consists of department materials and included photos both identified and unidentified, The Focus newsletters, newspaper clippings, news releases, Phi Kappa Delta materials, Forensic league materials, and the North Dakota Journal of Speech and Theater. The materials are arranged in chronological order. Five pennants for the 33rd, 34th, 36th, 37th, and 38th Pi Kappa Delta National Convention were separated and place in the NDSU Artifact Collection, Textile Box 92.

Biographical / Historical
As of the 1960 bulletin, the Department of Communications was part of the College of Arts and Sciences, although the Speech Department was established by 1939 in the School of Applied Arts and Sciences. By the late 1980s, it was the Department of Mass Communications, Speech Communications, Theatre Arts. In 1992, Theatre Arts became part of the newly created Division of Fine Arts and Mass Communications and Speech Communications became components of the Communications Department.
In February 2006, it was announced that five new majors would be offered from the Communications Department in the fall 2006: management communication; journalism, broadcasting and communication technology; health communication; agricultural communication and public relations and advertising.
