Biography
Nels Stanley Saugstad was born January 27, 1908 in Minot to Edward and Margaret (Enger) Saugstad. He would graduate from Minot State University and go on to do his post graduate work at North Dakota State University. While at NDSU he was the faculty in entomology and served as the assistant state entomologist.
Later, he would teach and became the superintendent of public schools in Wilton, North Dakota as well as working with wildlife restoration for the Game and Fish department in Bismarck. On may 16, 1941 he married Arlene L. Loehrke. In 1943, they would return to his family farm and farm there until a new home was built across the road.
Stanley would serve seven terms in the North Dakota State House of Representatives as a republican from 1953 to 1963 as well as 1967. In 1963 he would become Speaker of the House. He also served as the second vice president for the North Dakota Constitutional Convention in 1972.
He was active in Ward county’s centennial celebration and served on the boards of both North Dakota and Ward county historical societies. He also worked as a land appraiser and many other committees and groups. Stanley died August 17, 1992 in Minot, North Dakota
