Biographical / Historical

The Institute for the Study of Cultural Diversity (ISCD) was founded in 1992 under the Direction of Dr. Robert Littlefield to promote the dissemination of ideas, knowledge and understanding between cultures. ISCD is based on the belief that we share an ethical responsibility to deepen our knowledge of multi-culturality, so as to reduce conflict and promote tolerance in a world of diverse and interdependent peoples.

ISCD also aims to promote the study of cultural diversity in the classroom. At the current time, ISCD offers an Intercultural Communication course (COMM 216), which intends to broaden students' understanding and critical thinking skills with regards to cultural differences and cross-cultural interactions. The course in now a fundamental requirement for numerous undergraduate programs at North Dakota State University, such as Public Relations and Advertising, Management Communication, Agricultural Communication, and Pharmaceutical Sciences.

Additionally, ISCD provides referrals and information on intercultural topics, conducts research on intercultural issues, holds educational and public awareness events, and supports professional activities in the field on issues related to community building and collaboration with student groups on campus.

ISCD will maintain academic relationships with the Division of Equity, Diversity, and Global Outreach, the Department of Communication, and the College of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences. ISCD is open to affiliations with other relevant parties from across the campus.

As Director of the Institute for the Study of Cultural Diversity, Dr. Littlefield is responsible for the leadership and administration of the institute’s activities, including course offerings, research, advocacy and the development of collaborative efforts that support the creation of a diverse and inclusive environment for all students. He has a wealth of experience in the intercultural communication field, having been teaching and conducting research on this topic for over 40 years. He now teaches the Intercultural Communication, as well as other courses in crisis and risk communication.

In addition to these responsibilities, Dr. Littlefield is the principal investigator for two grants, from the National Center for Food Protection and Defense (NCFPD) and the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, and the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA). Through his work with the NCFPD, he is collaborating on a number of projects developing risk messages for diverse cultural groups. The USDA project involves establishing and maintaining a culture-centered infrastructure on the Standing Rock Reservation as part of a renewal project focusing on the land, beef production and people.

Dr. Littlefield also is a journal editor for Communication Studies, a journal sponsored by the Central States Communication Association. He has also served for many years at the community organization Lions Clubs International and is the campus adviser for the NDSU Lions Club
