Biographical / Historical
In the 1916-1917 Bulletin the division of Architecture and Architectural Engineering is first reported. When the School of Mechanic Arts was established in 1917, the following divisions were established: architecture and architectural engineering, civil engineering, industrial engineering, mechanical engineering, and physics. The 1984-1986 Bulletin shows the addition of the Department of Landscape Architecture, which had been approved in 1983. As of the 1990-1992 Bulletin Architecture and Landscape Architecture have combined into a single department.
The School of Architecture and Landscape Architecture offers a collaborative, studio-based, and accredited, design professional experience located in the vibrant urban setting of Fargo, ND. Our students develop creative problem-solving skills and lifelong intellectual curiosity while pursuing their own design philosophies. The school prepares students to be design leaders who will impact the built environment in a creative and sustainable manner.
The school offers a fully accredited educational experience comprised of a Master of Architecture degree and a four-year Bachelor of Science in Architecture program. Together, these degrees provide a solid foundation for design excellence and meet the requirements for professional licensure.
Architecture is a fine art devoted to the design of the human environment. The architect is concerned with the aesthetic, social, environmental, technological and psychological factors that influence the design of a building. Architects are involved in the success, quality and appearance of a building within the context of a community and the city. Architecture is a dynamic profession that ranges from residential houses to large-scale urban buildings. An architect can design houses, commercial buildings, museums, college science buildings, and resorts, as well as many other building types.
Landscape architecture is a dynamic, broad-spectrum profession that incorporates many disciplines. Geology, ecology and horticulture, architecture and engineering, geography, the social sciences and the fine arts are a few of the contributors to these “architects of the land.” The function and aesthetics of parks, housing developments, transportation corridors, urban plazas, zoos and campuses all reflect the acquired skill of landscape architects using both “hard” (built) and “soft” (planted) materials to both sustain and manipulate the natural environment. Landscape architects design exterior spaces with sketches, detail models, and working drawings for their clients as well as the companies and contractors that will use these specifications to bring life to the practitioner’s vision. The unique challenges for landscape architects span everything from small residential landscapes and large-scale urban developments to regional watersheds. Collaborating with architects, planners and engineers, landscape architects create compelling and memorable exterior spaces that affect the lives of people who inhabit them.
