Biographical / Historical

As Director of the Institute for the Study of Cultural Diversity, Dr. Littlefield is responsible for the leadership and administration of the institute’s activities, including course offerings, research, advocacy and the development of collaborative efforts that support the creation of a diverse and inclusive environment for all students. He has a wealth of experience in the intercultural communication field, having been teaching and conducting research on this topic for over 40 years. He now teaches the Intercultural Communication, as well as other courses in crisis and risk communication.

In addition to these responsibilities, Dr. Littlefield is the principal investigator for two grants, from the National Center for Food Protection and Defense (NCFPD) and the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, and the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA). Through his work with the NCFPD, he is collaborating on a number of projects developing risk messages for diverse cultural groups. The USDA project involves establishing and maintaining a culture-centered infrastructure on the Standing Rock Reservation as part of a renewal project focusing on the land, beef production and people.

Dr. Littlefield also is a journal editor for Communication Studies, a journal sponsored by the Central States Communication Association. He has also served for many years at the community organization Lions Clubs International and is the campus adviser for the NDSU Lions Club.
