Biographical / Historical

The Athenian Literary Society was formed in the fall of 1906 with the first Presidents being Genevieve Holkesvig and O.W. Davis.

The following excerpt is taken from the 1915 NDAC Agassiz Annual:

The Athenian is the oldest literary society on the campus. At first all members of good standing were eligible, but the numbers became so large that they had to limit membership to college students only. The Athenians have the distinction of being the only non-segregated literary society at the college.

They hold meetings every Friday evening at half-past-seven in the Athenian room, in the basement of the library. A program is first given at which their illustrious debaters, orators, declaimers, and other literary and musical geniuses gain practice in these various arts. Following this is a business meeting. And last but not least is their social time, which is looked forward to by all Athenians-and looked into often by the lonesome Philos. Several times they have been seen looking longingly thru the Athenian windows, or softly stealing down the stairs to listen sadly to the fun and laughter. It is rumored that on one eve of merry-making while several Philos were wandering around outside the Athenian rooms, one of them accidently sat on the electric plate that the Athenians used for making coffee. This was too much for any self-respecting current to bear so it blew the fuse out and left the Athenians in darkness. Upon going out to see what was the trouble, they saw three Philos rushing around the corner of the library, and immediately gave chase. One short fat one was not so well versed in the art of running and was caught. But he promised right away that he would be a good little boy and never do it again, so the Athenians let him go.

The Athenians have shown marked ability along all literary lines, as well as other branches of work at the college. In the stunt contest at the Annual Literary Festival they won first prize. They defeated the Philomathians in the inter-society debate, and they were well represented on teams debating with South Dakota, Manitoba, and California. The first place in the declamatory contest was won by an Athenian.

Yes, indeed, the Athenians are a jolly progressive bunch that make their presence known in every phase of college life.
