College of Human Development and Education

The foundation for the establishment of the College of Human Development and Education was laid 100 years before, in 1892. In the first North Dakota Agricultural College catalog, published in 1892, a winter course in domestic economy was offered. By 1893, a Department of Domestic Economy had been established and in 1898, the department was called the Department of Household Economy, to reflect its emphasis. In 1902, the Department was renamed Household Economics and renamed again in 1904 to Domestic Science. As of 1910, it was the Department of Home Economics. The Department continued to grow and in 1917 when Schools were formed, Home Economics was one of the six Schools at the College. With the change of names in 1960 from North Dakota Agricultural College to North Dakota State University, the School of Home Economics became the College of Home Economics. The next major change occurred in July, 1992, when the College of Home Economics became the College of Human Development and Education. This change combined the School of Education, the College of Home Economics, and the Division of Health, Physical Education and Recreation. The five academic units within the college were: Apparel, Textiles, and Interior Design; Child Development and Family Science; Education; Food and Nutrition; and Health, Physical Education, and Recreation. As of 2006, there were four units within the college: Apparel, Design, Facility and Hospitality Management [name changed from Apparel, Textiles, and Interior Design in 2001/2002]; Child Development and Family Science; Education; and Health, Nutrition and Exercise Sciences, [merged food and nutrition and health, physical education, and recreation in 2001]. The College decided to change the name to the College of Human Sciences and Education to better describe the college. The new name went into effect July 1, 2019. The purpose of the change is twofold. First, Human Sciences is more inclusive of the programs offered within the College. Second, the change follows national trends.

The College of Human Sciences and Education (HSE) at North Dakota State University offers 9 undergraduate majors plus 18 teaching specialties, and graduate study at the Master's, Specialist, Certificate and Doctoral levels. Several of our undergraduate and graduate programs are web-based, making it possible for students to complete their program from anywhere in the world. The Center for 4-H Youth Development offers learning opportunities outside the classroom across the state. Through 4-H programming we reach over 25,250 North Dakota youth.

Classroom and hands-on experience are provided to promote learning. Students in all HSE programs have the opportunity to participate in experiential learning experiences, such as internships, practicum and student teaching. These experiences allow students to apply their classroom learning in real-life situations.

Apparel, Design, and Hospitality Management Department

The beginning of the Department of Apparel, Design, Facility and Hospitality Management (ADFHM) is found with the creation of the Department of Clothing and Textiles in 1922. Prior to that there were some design courses in the Applied Arts Department. In 1953, the name changed to the Department of Textiles and Clothing. For 1970-1971 academic year, the Department was Textiles, Clothing & Related Art. In 1971 Design became a separate department, as did Textiles and Clothing. Fashion Design was part of the Design Department from 1977-1983, but was located in Textiles and Clothing from 1972-1976 and again from 1984-1988. In 1988 the departments merged into the Department of Apparel, Textiles and Interior Design. In June of 2001 the hotel, motel, restaurant management major merged into Department of Apparel, Textiles and Interior Design. In the fall of 2002, the department became the Department of Apparel, Design, Facility and Hospitality Management. “The department offers three majors: Apparel and Textiles, Hospitality and Tourism Management, and Interior Design.” (NDSU, 2006-2008 Bulletin). Within the department is the Emily P. Reynolds Costume Collection, which is named after Professor Emily Reynolds, long-time Chair of the department (1966-1981) and through whose efforts and drive the historic costume collection grew. In 2008 the name of the Department was changed to Apparel, Design and Hospitality Management (ADHM), since the department had discontinued admittance to the facility management program/major in 2006.

Human Development and Family Science Department

The roots of the Child Development and Family Science Department can be traced to the introduction of the course, “The Child” in 1922-1923 in the then Department if Institutional and Household Management. In 1932 it became the Department of Household Management and Child Training. As of November 1960, it was known as the Child Development and Family Relations Department. The department as it is known today, Child Development and Family Science was created by the merger of the Child Development and Family Relations Department and the Home Management and Family Economics Department on July 1, 1985.

On September 17, 2009, the North Dakota State Board of Higher Education approved the department name change from the Child Development and Family Science Department to the Human Development and Family Science Department.

Department of Education

The Department of Education was established late in 1907 or early 1908 “in conformity with the Nelson law, passed by congress in 1907, to the end that graduates of colleges who are otherwise prepared for teaching science, agriculture, domestic science, manual training, and the like may have pedagogical training.…” (Catalogue, North Dakota Agricultural College, 1908-1909, p. 96). In 1917 the School of Education was established. In addition to the School of Education, the Department of Household Management and Home Economics Education was created in 1922-1923; later the Department of Home Economics Education. In 1939, under the Division of Education, the Department of Education and Psychology was established. By 1955 the Department was part of the School of Applied Arts and Sciences. In 1963 the Institute of Education was created, specifically for teacher education and no longer affiliated with psychology. By 1980 the School of Education was re-established, with the purpose of coordinating all teacher education programs in the various colleges of the University. Agricultural Education was offered through the College of Agriculture through 1985, as of the 1986/88 catalog, it was offered through the School of Education. With the establishment of the College of Human Development and Education in 1992, the School of Education became part of the College and the Department of Home Economics Educations ceased to exist.

Health, Nutrition, and Exercise Sciences Department

Food and nutrition courses been taught at the University since 1892, under the Department of Domestic Economy. Although athletics is mentioned in early catalogues, it is not until the 1905-06 Catalogue that credit could be taken for athletics - “students may gain regular class credits as per the regular schedule for physical class work.” The Department of Foods and Nutrition was established in 1922. It was also in 1922 that actual courses were established in the Department of Physical Training and Athletics. As of the 1939-1940 Catalog the Department of Physical Education was in place, listed under the Division of Education. As of the 1947-1948 Catalog, Physical Education was an independent department. As of the 1956-1957 Catalog, the Division of Athletics and Physical Education was in existence. As of the 1965-1967 Catalog, Physical Education was listed as two departments (men and women) under the College of Arts and Sciences. As of the 1970-1972 Catalog, the Division of Physical Education for Men and Women was listed under the College of Arts and Sciences. In the 1972-1974 Catalog, it is listed as the Division of Physical Education, under the College of Arts and Sciences [Humanities and Social Sciences – 1973]. As of the 1978-1980 Catalog, the Division of Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Athletics is listed, under the College of Humanities and Social Sciences. With the creation of the College of Human Develop and Education in 1992, the Department of Health, Physical Education and Recreation was established in the College. In June of 2001, the Department of Health, Physical Education and Recreation was changed to the Department of Health Nutrition and Exercise Sciences. The Department of Food and Nutrition was eliminated and the food and nutrition major was merged into this new department.
