Scope and Contents

This collection contains sixteen folders of various architectural drawings for both residential and commercial structures. These drawings span from 1950 to 1981, though some have no dates associated with them. Most of the drawings were done by hand and in pencil by Professor Jenkinson himself. Along with this, most of these designs are for homes in the Fargo-Moorhead area, though Detroit Lakes and other communities are also featured. There is one other folder which contains biographical information on Professor Jenkinson such as old CVs and obituaries along with the finding aid.

Biographical / Historical

Born September 15, 1925 ------- Died December 19, 2016 Harold Jenkinson was born in Detroit Lakes, Minnesota in September 1925. He served in the US Navy during WW2. After the war he attended North Dakota Agricultural College (now NDSU) and graduated with a Bachelor of Art in Architecture in 1955. Between 1955 and 1962 he worked for various architectural firms in the Fargo-Moorhead area. He would later join the faculty of the NDSU Department of Architecture in 1962 as an Associate Professor. After receiving his master’s degree in architecture, the University of Illinois Champaign-Urbana in 1972, Harold would become a full professor in 1974. He would serve in various departmental roles for the program until he retired in the early 1990s. He was married to Ruth Sunram of Detroit Lakes in 1947 and had two sons Bruce and Thomas. Harold volunteered throughout the Fargo-Moorhead community at places like his church, Olivet Lutheran Church, and for no-kill shelters in the area. Harold passed away in December 2016 survived by his wife and sons. Harold designed several homes and commercial structures in the Fargo-Moorhead area as well as around Detroit Lakes. Many of his designs are reflective of the modernist tradition of the 1950s and 1960s. Public spaces he designed in the Fargo-Moorhead area that still stand such as Hawthorne Elementary and YMCA Complex in Island Park. Professor Jenkinson even designed his own home in addition to the Hanson-Runsvold Funeral Home where his own funeral was held.
