The N.D Earthworm Survey Collection contains the research gathered by Rodney Utter. The collection contains papers written by Utter regarding his research, correspondence, worm identification guides, and maps of the research teams collection points. The collection also contains the Earthworm collection data for all N.D counties gathered between 1991-2021, worm core data, and worm egg data gathered during the research team’s collection.

Biographical / Historical
Rodney Utter worked as a research technician and specialist in soil science from 1977-2021. He participated in research in the area of soil management, dealing with conservation of soil and water resources. He was responsible for field and lab equipment and supplies, establishing and maintaining research plots, collecting and analyzing plant and soil samples, collecting and summarizing data and preparing results for publication. Research information on earthworms in North Dakota was limited, so he spent considerable time studying this area. He has given lectures on earthworms to soil science classes and developed a website on earthworms to provide easy access to research information. He served as a safety representative for the department and helped train faculty, staff and students in proper safety procedures. He has also served on a classification committee for the university office of human resources to develop criteria for classifying professional and technical research personnel. He received his B.S degree from NDSU. He received the Charles and Linda Moses Professional Staff Award for Excellence.
He was nominated for being an “example of the image the public and co-workers need to have of NDSU employees. He is professional first, but always friendly and helpful.”
