Fred W. Rider was born in Oak Grove, Wisconsin on March 6, 1881. He spent his childhood in Wisconsin and Elgin, Illinois. According to his obituary he came to Fargo in 1914 and for a time operated a photography studio in the Metropole Hotel. He is listed for the first time in the 1922 city directory. In 1923 he moved to California, where he continued his photography business until 1947, when he returned to Fargo to live with his daughter Fanny Gugel. He worked for a time at Scherling’s Studio and then operated Smith Studio. He
